WALLS THAT TELL A HISTORY

Surrounded by the breathtaking peaks of the Hohe Tauern, the Rauris Valley lies at the foot of the Sonnblick and the Großglockner. Known for its rich gold-mining history, this valley has preserved its natural beauty and traditions for centuries.
In the heart of historic Rauris, nestled among vast meadows, forests, and mountains, stands the Fürstenmühle—a medieval building whose nearly 500-year-old walls tell stories of the past. Built in 1565, it was once the archbishop’s mill, later serving as a local bakery, before falling into disuse.
Thanks to a passionate restoration by the Winkelmayer family, the Fürstenmühle has been carefully revived, preserving its unique architectural heritage while transforming it into an inviting retreat where history and comfort meet.

HISTORY
Built in 1565 by Salzburg Archbishop Joan Jacob Cuen-Belasi, the Fürstenmühle was an essential part of daily life in Rauris for centuries. Functioning as both a mill and bakery, it provided flour and fresh bread to the valley’s residents, including miners drawn to the region’s gold deposits. The solid Rauris natural stone walls, impressive wooden roof truss from the late Gothic period, and medieval architectural details reflect the craftsmanship of the time.
For generations, the Fürstenmühle remained a key part of the village, its large bulk floor used for grain storage and its stone ovens baking fresh bread. Over time, as industrialization and changing economic patterns altered traditional ways of life, the mill's operations slowed, and it was eventually abandoned. Left untouched, the building fell into decay, yet its historic character and solid structure endured, waiting for a new purpose.
RESTORATION
Recognizing its significance, the Winkelmayer family, whose roots lie in Rauris, took on the challenge of restoring the Fürstenmühle. With guidance from the Salzburg Federal Monuments Office, the goal was to preserve its medieval charm while adapting it for modern living.
The roof was reconstructed with wooden shingles and dormers, the original box windows were rebuilt, and the stone walls carefully restored using authentic Rauris natural stone. Inside, historic wooden beams and hand-crafted elements were complemented by high-quality materials, ensuring both authenticity and comfort.
Today, the former bakery and living area house the "Mühlwand" and "Schüttboden" apartments, while the mill area has been transformed into Apartment "Mühle", all connected by the original central staircase.
